TALENTED Afro-jazz and Afro-fusion musician, Tawanda Chari − popularly known as WaCharie − is gearing up to release his highly anticipated Extended Play (EP), Mazwi Enzara next month (September).
The Mutare-born artiste, who has steadily established himself as one of the fastest rising names in Zimbabwe’s music scene, last dropped a Valentine’s Day trio earlier this year.
The project included The Love Triangle, a beautifully woven three-track set, alongside the visuals for Kana Wandida.
Now, with his six-track EP, WaCharie is ready to take listeners on a journey of emotion, storytelling, and Afrocentric rhythm.
Translated as Voices of Hunger, Mazwi Enzara is not about food scarcity, but about deeper forms of longing. It is a soulful exploration of yearning for love, dignity, recognition, and the ever-elusive sense of fulfilment.
The project reflects WaCharie’s gift for merging poignant narratives with Afro-fusion’s textured soundscapes, resulting in music that resonates far beyond the dancefloor.
The title track, Mazwi Enzara, strikes at the heart of the project. It delves into the emotional hunger for self-worth, respect, and visibility.
WaCharie paints a picture of the agony of effort yielding little, of dreams feeling erased by circumstances, and of clinging to the desperate hope that dawn will come.
“It is not the hunger of the stomach,” he explains, “but the hunger of the spirit, of wanting to feel enough, seen, and valued.”
The emotional weight continues with Nguva Yakaramba, a reflective piece about time — how it disrupts expectations and often steals precious moments with loved ones.
In the song, WaCharie acknowledges the inevitability of grief and memory, portraying the fragility of human existence.
Other standout tracks include Penjeni, Hatibhureki, Wakandijaidza, and Ndapotsa Nda, which closes the EP with a sobering reminder that “almost doesn’t count.”
To mark the release, WaCharie is set to host an exclusive listening session where fans and supporters will experience the EP in its entirety before the official drop.
The event promises to be an intimate moment of connection, where the audience can immerse themselves in the project’s heartfelt stories and soulful sound.
Speaking about Mazwi Enzara, WaCharie said: “This project is deeply personal to me because it carries, not only my story, but the stories of many people who are going through silent battles.
“When I sat down to create Mazwi Enzara, I wanted to move away from the surface-level love songs and really dive into the complexities of human existence.
“The title itself speaks to the hunger within all of us − not just the physical hunger, but that unspoken yearning for peace, recognition, and a place in this world where we feel valued. Every track on this EP is a reflection of real emotions.
“Nguva Yakaramba, for instance, is a song that came from losing loved ones and realising how powerless we are against time.
“Hatibhureki is more about resilience, a reminder that even when life throws its hardest punches, we are still standing.
“Then Ndapotsa Nda comes in as a lesson that sometimes being close to success or love is not enough; we must either fully attain it or accept that it slipped away. I want people to listen to this project and feel seen, to know that their struggles are not unique to them alone, and to also find strength in the music.
“Above all, Mazwi Enzara is about hope − hope that even in our deepest hunger, relief is always around the corner.”
With Mazwi Enzara, WaCharie continues to solidify his place in the Afro-jazz and Afro-fusion space. His music has always spoken to the heart, but this upcoming EP promises to echo more profoundly − offering not just melodies but messages that inspire resilience, reflection, and renewal.
