RIDING the momentum of a strong season, Colleta Wakuruwarewa capped off a memorable April with a gold medal at the Easter Open Chess Championship, held at Regency Flamboyant Hotel in Masvingo.
Wakuruwarewa managed to get it right this time after finishing third at the CBZ Nationals which were held in the capital earlier this month.
The Harare-based player won the gold medal in the women’s category, while the men’s title went to Zambia’s Gilliam Bwalya. Wakuruwarewa racked up seven points to win the female category after a tie-break, having finished level with three others – Nomalungelo Mathe, who had to settle for silver, Women Candidate Master Refiloe Mudodo who took the bronze, and Tatenda Ndou, who finished fourth.
Bwalya managed eight and a half points and was ahead of Spencer Masango and Tapiwa Jele, who finished second and third respectively.
Wakuruwarewa was thrilled with her win and said she is looking forward to more tournaments.
“I am excited about this win. April has been a great month for me in terms of chess. In the first week of the month we played the CBZ Nationals where I won a bronze medal.”
