“MY dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry”
Listening is one of the most difficult things to do. To sit down, listen, take advice and implement it, is often difficult for most people. All too often we find it hard to accept the truth about the things we are doing wrong that we can improve on or how our world looks in the eyes of others.
We are more prone to listening to statements that seek to praise, that tell us that we are wonderful and that we can do no wrong. We generally do not take kindly to fault finding and thus we end up closed from the realities that we must be working to correct to become better people.
All too often when confronted we either become angry, keep quiet or coil up. The people who tell us the truth then become our number one enemies and we avoid them at all costs. How many times have people approached you with good intentions and you have reacted in a manner that has not allowed the relationship between you and the party to progress? We may not know it but the very fact that we were given ears means that we need to use them to receive information, process it and act upon it.
So many people have failed to reach their potential simply because they chose not to listen. Though our minds and our egos will tell us we know it all, the truth is no one has a monopoly on knowledge and the Lord can use whoever he deems to be an instrument to be the deliverer of information.
When we receive information we spend so much time analysing the credentials of the messenger rather than giving the messenger the benefit of the doubt as someone who could have been sent from above, to communicate a life-changing message.
When Moses was sent back to Pharaoh one of the greatest mistakes Pharaoh made was to ignore the message but rather concentrate on the messenger whom he had known from youth.
The questions he probably asked himself were “how can this person I grew up with claim to represent a higher being, yet he, like me, grew up in the same household and there was nothing exceptional about him that would warrant this new found knowledge?”
