Walking in Spirit: Stewardship

I Peter 4:10-11 NKJV
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

A few years ago a close friend of mine came to my church and preached on stewardship within the Christian setting. The word stewardship simply translated means ‘to be a good manager of something entrusted to one’s care.’

Very often we forget that we have a duty of care that we must exhibit to everything we have been entrusted with. Today I want to look at this topic from a different angle.

Are you aware that you have been entrusted, with the being that is you? The very essence of your existence is a contract of trust that you have been left with. The detail of the contract involves looking after your body in recognition that it is the temple of the living God, what you drink, eat, say and do should ultimately reflect this fact. We sometimes forget that we are ultimately stewards who have been tasked with a set of responsibilities, one of which involves pursuing the dreams that God has placed in our hearts. Somehow we always seem to have an excuse for the things we don’t do, we look for the simplest of excuses to avoid responsibility or to out rightly behave in a dishonest manner that does not allow us to fulfil our moral, spiritual and mental obligations.

It’s somewhat easier to run away from things than confront them. As I have studied the Bible, I have noted one very interesting facet, all the great biblical characters had to face some challenge or the other. It seems a lot easier to celebrate their glory, than to acknowledge the pain that led to their glory and more importantly the aspects around their faith that led them to accomplish the things they set out to do.

It seems easier to just give up on our dreams. Surely the Lord who has entrusted us with these dreams had a purpose for placing them in our hearts. Our God is a sovereign God who specialises in the impossible.

Be blessed.
