A BULAWAYO man was shot dead in South Africa by armed robbers who pounced on his shop last Sunday. Cde Absalum Vundla, a war veteran, died in the neighbouring country where he ran a shop.
His brother Mr Innocent Vundla yesterday said the family was still in shock following the fatal shooting.
“He had gone to South Africa the previous week as he has businesses in Tembisa Township. Unknown assailants raided his shop and shot him before getting away with valuables,” he said.
Mr Vundla said his brother died in a South African hospital where he was rushed to following the shooting. “His body crossed the border today (yesterday) for burial on Monday,” he said.
Mr Vundla said his brother also owned a small business at his rural home in Lupane. Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) Bulawayo District 5 social welfare chairman Cde Japhet Ndebele said Cde Vundla would be buried on Monday at the Bulawayo Provincial Heroes Acre in Nkulumane suburb.
“The way he died is painful. No one deserves to die like that. I worked with him in the association, he was my subordinate. We worked together in dealing with the welfare issues of the comrades,” said Cde Ndebele.
Cde Vundla joined the liberation war in 1974 and was deployed in various areas. In 1980, he was demobilised and left for South Africa where he opened his shop. He later came back home, but continued with his business in South Africa.
Cde Vundla is survived by his wife and child.
