LIBERATION war hero Comrade John Zikayi was laid to rest at Manicaland Provincial Heroes Acre this afternoon following his death at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital on July 4.
He was 66.
Cde Zikayi had battled a stroke for a long period.
Born in Chipinge, Cde Zikayi attended Mariya Primary School, but his formal education was cut short in Grade 4.
At the age of 18, in 1976, he joined the liberation struggle in Mozambique, where he was deployed in Manica Province as part of the armed resistance against the white colonial rule.
In a tribute to the late hero, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza hailed Cde Zikayi as “a committed cadre” whose contribution to the region’s liberation efforts remains invaluable.
“Cde Zikayi’s patriotic spirit and dedication played a significant role in shaping the province’s revolutionary legacy,” said Minister Mugadza.
Minister Mugadza was represented during the burial by one of the directors in his office, Mr Joseph Mashingaidze.
The burial ceremony was attended by family members, fellow war veterans, and community members who gathered to pay their respects to a life marked by sacrifice and determination.
