The Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development yesterday gave 35 motorbikes to its ward officers to enable them to monitor and evaluate its programmes and projects. This follows the facilitation by the ministry of riding lessons and acquisition of licences by the officers.
During the official disbursement of motorbikes, secretary in ministry Mrs Sibusisiwe Zembe said the motorbikes will help to monitor their projects at grassroots.
“The motorbike scheme is an initiative that we undertook as a ministry after realising that our cadres at grassroots level are failing to monitor and evaluate our programmes and projects due to lack of mobility.”
She added that the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development had recommended the initiative as it helps to make a follow-up on the loans they gave the women and to monitor and support their projects.
“This intervention was also highly recommended by the parliamentary portfolio committee on the ministry, who challenged the ministry to come up with water-tight strategies to ensure that disbursed loans are repaid timeously,” she said
“This necessitated the need for you to be motorised so that you can inspect and give technical support to all on-going community projects.”
