UNITED States-based Zimbabwean coach, Samkeliso “Young Pep” Ncube says the two friendly internationals which the Warriors played in Morocco show that they are still work in progress.
The Warriors, who missed many of their regular stars, were beaten 0-2 by a strong Burkina Faso side but were held to a 1-1 draw by Niger last night.
Michael Nees used a number of new faces, including Johan Fabisch, who impressed in yesterday’s match.
‘Young Pep’ is in charge of New York-based Pathfinder FC and he dreams of coaching in the Major Soccer League.
“These results highlight that the Warriors are still a work in progress. While the draw shows some positive signs, particularly in attack, the team needs to improve defensively and be more clinical.
“Friendly matches are not just about results but performance and these games give the coaching staff a clearer picture of what needs fixing before competitive fixtures.
“There is talent in Zimbabwean football, it’s now about better organisation, game management and giving young players enough exposure and tactical discipline. The next few months will be crucial.”
The Warriors wrapped up their tour in Morocco with a 1-1 draw against Niger yesterday.
Nees ended their tour with just a point, having suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Burkina Faso, five days ago.
This Nees’s 10th game as Warriors boss.
He has recorded six draws, two losses and two wins.
Defender Gerald Takwara’s early strike was cancelled by Niger in the 71th minute.
Goalkeeper, Elvis Chipezeze was given the nod ahead of Washington Arubi.
Chipezeze appeared sluggish as he made some mistakes that could have caused harm had it not been the awareness of stand-in captain, Teenage Hadebe, who provided cover.
Fabisch had a decent game in the midfield of the park and he is one of the few players who played 90 minutes.
Fabisch combined well with Sean Fusire and Tino Kadewere, who once again reminded fans that he has not lost it all, with a decent performance.
Goalkeeper Marley Tavaziva was given his debut after the break and he seemed composed in critical moments.
Central defender, Isheanesu Mauchi, also lasted the entire match and played like a regular, winning a number of duels.
Khama Billiat, Walter Musona and Mthokozise Msebe were introduced late in the game.
They made an instant impact, injecting life in the Warriors’s offensive unit.
