AFTER just one training session, the Young Warriors have been forced to abort their camp for the Eduardo Dos Santos Foundation Invitational Tournament set for Angola at the end of this month. The national Under-20 soccer team had trooped into camp on Tuesday after receiving an invitation to Luanda but have been told to break camp and would only regroup next week.
On Monday, Under-20 team manager Patrick Mutesva announced a squad of payers mainly drawn from the Premiership and Division One teams.
The Young Warriors, who were later told about the postponement of the tournament from this weekend, had already started trooping into camp and held a workout at Barclays Sports Club yesterday.
Zifa communications manager, Xolisani Gwesela, yesterday said the training camp has been put on hold until Tuesday next week.
“The national Under-20 team have been advised to break up camp for now. This new development comes after we received communication from Angola that the FESA Commemorations Tournament had been set for September 28 and 29.
“So we hope the players will regroup on Tuesday next week while at the same time we await for confirmation of the final itinerary from Angola,” said Gwesela.
Gwesela said they will also await to know the other participants besides the hosts Angola.
“We hope that by next week, Angola would have indicated the other two teams that have also been invited to take part in this tournament,” said Gwesela.
National Under-20 coach, Jairos Tapera, is hoping to use the tournament in Luanda as a platform to prepare the Young Warriors for the Cosafa Youth Championship which will be staged before the end of the year. Tapera has selected CAPS United’s left-back Ronald Pfumbidzai, Takudzwa Mahori and Tinovimba Muskwe while he has also included the hard running Abel Gwatidzo from Dynamos and national Under-17 skipper Tino Kawedera in his squad.
