THE Warriors yesterday moved to their best ever placing in over a year when they eased into 98th place on the latest Fifa Coca-Cola World Football Rankings.For more than a year, Zimbabwe’s best placing had been on 100th place, achieved in February 2014, following an impressive run at the Africa Nations Championship finals, before their best jump yesterday.
After gaining 329 points during the period under review, Zimbabwe managed to jump four places from last months’ 102nd place.
The Warriors also improved on the Confederation of African Football where they are now placed 26th.
Looking at the Warrior’s placing over the past 12 months, Ian Gorowa could have some reason to believe his project is on the right track ahead of the draw for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying draw this month.
Exactly a year ago when German national Klaus Dieter Pagels was in charge, Zimbabwe were ranked 101 while they dropped further to 105 in May and improved slightly to 102 in June 2013.
In July, Zimbabwe plunged to 114 and the free fall continued in August when they were at 116 before improving to 101 in September.
Zimbabwe started the year 2014 in position 105 and their placing at 100 after the Chan qualifiers had been their best move before the latest gain.
Meanwhile, the newly elected Zifa board are set to hold their first official board meeting at the Zifa Village tomorrow.
A statement by Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela yesterday highlighted that the meeting will also see the presentation of the Zifa secretariat to the board.
Many stakeholders feel that the secretariat, headed by Jonathan Mashingaidze, was one of the weakest links in the previous board and needs a complete overhaul.
But having played a key role in the elections, it’s unlikely that changes will be effected in this department.
Other items listed on the agenda is the handover-take-over report, organisational roles, preparation for strategic planning retreat and the setting up of standing committees.
The meeting could also come up with a position on the Warriors’ outstanding bonuses from the Chan tournament in South Africa.
