While many fans have only known him as a guitar wielding musician from his early days with Afrika Revenge to his later years as a solo artiste,A Willis Wataffi is now ready to show another side of himself on the small screen.
Drawing from his training years ago at the cityas home of the arts, Amakhosi Cultural Centre, Wataffi is now determined to show he is as talented an actor as he is a musician.
Wataffi is one of the star attractions in the drama series, Dirty Necklace which premiered on ZTV last week. The show, which features Wataffi, Nothando Nobengula and Xolisani Nyathi in the lead roles, airs every Saturday at 9:30 PM.
Wataffi said his appearance in the Gugulethu Ndlovu-Chikura directed drama series had not been a challenge because of his training when his career was at its infancy.
a?Some people might not have noticed but I have been doing movies since way back. I got the training for that aspect of my career at Amakhosi although I always considered acting my minor and music my major,a? he said in an interview with B-Metro this week.
The move to appear in a small screen productions comes after Wataffias decision to make a foray into the world of gospel music with his album Songs of David. That move paid off for the Afrika Revenge front-man, with one of his songs, Ngaavongwe spending multiple weeks at the top of the gospel charts.
Now fans will be eager to see whether this latest venture in the world of showbiz will bear similar fruit.
According to the musician cum actor however, fans should not look at it as a debut on the screen for him as he has starred in other productions prior to his appearance on the ZTV drama series.
a?This is not new territory for me as I have appeared in movies like Lobola and The Gentleman alongside Munya Chidzonga and Presley Chweneyagae of the Tsotsi fame. I also anchored the DSTV game show Warara Wasala. This is part of a larger vision for Qaya Rootz Pictures as weare now doing documentaries and short stories in addition to music videos,a? he said.
Although he is happy to embrace acting as an addition to his music, Wataffi pointed out the difference between the two disciplines.
a?My music isnat an act at all. Acting is make believe and you learn how to take a script and get into character at school. My stage act in contrast is all real,a? he said.
