WATCH: 284 inmates freed in Matabeleland North under Presidential amnesty

284 inmates from correctional facilities across Matabeleland North were released on Tuesday following President Mnangagwa’s proclamation of Clemency Order No. 1 of 2026.

The President exercised his Executive Prerogative of Mercy in terms of Section 112 (1)(a) and (d) of the Constitution, granting amnesty to 4 305 prisoners countrywide as part of efforts to promote restorative justice and decongest the country’s correctional facilities.

In Matabeleland North, the released inmates were drawn from Anju Farm Prison, which includes the Ntabazinduna Satellite, as well as the main prisons at Ntabazinduna, Binga, Hwange, Lupane, Nkayi, and Tsholotsho.

Also benefiting were inmates from the Victoria Falls Satellite, which falls under Hwange Prison, and the Inyathi Satellite under Nkayi Prison.

This Reporter was present at Victoria Falls Prison on Tuesday morning where eight inmates were set free.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa for the gesture, which gives them a second chance to reintegrate into society.

The amnesty is expected to reduce congestion in the province’s correctional facilities.
