Despite the chilly weather, which dampened hopes of an outdoor party, the Castle Braai Festival in Bulawayo went ahead on Saturday, with attendees opting to enjoy the fun indoors at the Chiefs Village Lounge.
While stalls, benches, and a stage had been set up outside for guests to enjoy their braai under the open sky, the cold weather forced many to retreat inside. Still, the festival drew a crowd, with some braving the cold to enjoy their meals outdoors, while most found comfort in the warmth of the bar area, ordering their braais and eating them indoors.
In an effort to keep the brave few outside comfortable, the venue staff quickly fired up braziers, placing one at each table to keep the cold at bay. This thoughtful gesture helped keep the outdoor crowd going for a while longer.
Entertainment on the day was provided by a mix of talented performers, including Ma9nine, Mzoe7, and DJ Sfiso, some of whom had to perform inside due to the weather. Resident DJs Zet Heart, Ace, Kaybee, Kay Deep, and MC Ras Khumbue also kept the energy high with their sets, creating a festive atmosphere despite the chill.
The event’s vibrant atmosphere confirmed that the silly season was in full swing, with attendees eager to have fun. Mzoe7, one of the performers, who was a hit at the event, said: “It was a great vibe. We performed inside, and the love we received was amazing. So many people wanted to join us on stage,” he said, thanking the audience for their support despite the cold.
He expressed his excitement about the turnout.
“I’m looking forward to more corporate engagements and growing as a brand. A big thanks to the Bulawayo community for showing up in numbers, even in the cold weather.”
Some attendees hoped the event would be held again under better conditions.
“This event needed a sunny day. It was fun, but we wanted to party outdoors, enjoying the smell of barbecue while having a good time. I hope the organisers consider hosting it again so we can have the full experience,” one attendee suggested.
Next weekend, the main Castle Braai Festival will be held at Old Hararians Sports Club in Harare. The event promises an exciting, star-studded line-up featuring performances by Winky D, Master H, Saintfloew, and South African sensation Kamo Mphela. DJ sets will be provided by Etherton B, DJ L Roy, DJ Irvine (Carling Black Label National DJ Champion for 2023), and DJ Toxy Gen.
Early bird tickets for the Harare event are already available online. Every ticket comes with a complimentary braai pack and a Castle Lager beer. Beers will be sold at pump prices, with Castle Lager Draught one litre priced at just US$1.
