TWO COPS exposed in a viral video allegedly taking a bribe and releasing a suspect without charge—right in the middle of the Harare city centre, have appeared in court.
Rudo Chirengendure (28) and Nyasha Michael Mupandira (34), are now facing criminal abuse of office charges under Section 174 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
On 18 April 2025, the duo was deployed to Parkade Rank in the CBD with a clear mission: round up touts, vendors, and illegal forex dealers. But instead, they were caught on camera accepting money from a member of the public. The same footage, now doing the rounds on social media, also shows them removing handcuffs from a female suspect — then letting her go, no questions asked!
The State says their conduct was a blatant betrayal of public trust, and has opposed bail, arguing the two should be remanded in custody pending further investigations.
The officers, reports the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), are set to return to court on 28 April for their bail ruling.
