WARD 9 Councillor Donaldson Mabutho had called on councillor, including himself, to resign from the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) if a permanent solution to deal with persistent fires at the Richmond Landfill is not found.

The landfill, also known as Ngozi Mine, has over the years experienced fires that in some cases burn for days on end leaving residents of Cowdray Park choking under clouds of smoke and soot.

Cllr Mabutho said councillor owe it to the residents of Bulawayo to resign if council does not find a permanent solution to the fires at Ngozi Mine.

He was speaking during a debate at a full council meeting in the council chambers on Wednesday afternoon.

“Some of the health complications that might start emanating from the Ngozi Mine fires could include cancerous diseases, birth defects and even mental trauma for the residents of Cowdray Park.

“We have turned this house (Council Chambers) into a talk show because we keep talking about the fires at Ngozi Mine but doing nothing about it. If we fail to address the problem at Ngozi Mine then we must all resign as councillors because we are doing a disservice to the residents of Cowdray Park. We will also fire the Town Clerk if he is failing to deal with the people that are supposed to find a lasting solution to the Ngozi Mine fires” said Cllr Mabutho.
