IN a powerful move to take the war on drugs to the streets, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe (ELCZ) Bulawayo East Parish has trained 40 peer educators under the fiery theme: “Stay Sober, Stay Strong!”
The training, held on 1 May 2025 at the Tshabalala-Sizinda Chapel in Ward 21, saw youths from churches and schools across the community being turned into anti-drug crusaders, armed with knowledge, scripture, and street-smart tactics.
Inspired by John 10:10, which warns that “the thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy,” the event aimed to stop drugs from robbing the youth of their future.
Mr Gwafa from the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) called peer educators “community change-makers,” saying,
“They are the light in the darkness of addiction. Change starts with us! Youths must live right and lead by example.”
Ward 21 Councillor Tinevimbo Maposa praised the initiative, saying,
“Workshops like this win souls and save futures. More stakeholders must rise and help protect our young people.”
Pastor Mbongeni Proud Dube, the engine behind the initiative, said the training included 40 peer educators — with reps from three local schools, the community, and the parish. They received T-shirts, certificates, and intense training on drug awareness, community outreach, and practical support strategies.
But that’s just the beginning.
COMING UP:
* May 3 – Massive Community Seminar with the Bishop, Dean, and health professionals.
* May 16 – Awareness March through Tshabalala-Sizinda with police escort and banners flying high.
* May 18 – Street Distribution Blitz as peer educators hit the ground to spread materials and hope.
The campaign will also include poetry, drama, and music to creatively educate and engage the youth.
When asked why it’s hard to spread awareness on a wider scale, one peer educator boldly answered:
“We need more knowledge and more support from elders. Help us rise!”
Pastor Dube agreed:
“This is a battle we must fight together; church, schools, community, and leaders.”
The ELCZ and its fearless peer educators are on a mission, not just to preach, but to protect, educate, and save a generation.
DRUGS BE Warned, THE CHURCH IS COMING FOR YOU!
