AS the nation marks the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV, a shocking video from Gweru has lit up social media, showing a young boy being viciously assaulted by a woman believed to be his mother.
The disturbing footage has sparked public outrage, with demands for urgent police action ringing across the country.
The clip, now widely shared, captures the woman clapping the boy seven times while shouting, “Why are you touching me, do you support your father?”
The violence, according to netizems, erupted during a domestic fight between the boy’s parents. The child had reportedly stepped in to defend his father after the woman allegedly struck him during the dispute.
A heartbreaking voice of a young girl, believed to be his sister, can be heard begging, “Mama rega kudaro,” pleading for their mother to stop.
The man filming, thought to be the father, is heard saying, “You are used to this and I am taking this video to post you,” to which the woman coldly replies, “Post it.”
The graphic nature of the clip has triggered a wave of condemnation and calls for justice. Social media users are demanding that police and child rights organisations treat the case as both child abuse and gender based violence, especially in this season dedicated to fighting such cruelty.
“Only a selfish and abusive mother can blame her own child for trying to make peace at home. This must be investigated and she must be brought to book,” said a Facebook user.
Child rights advocates have reminded the public that every child is entitled to protection, care, and safety as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
As calls grow louder, authorities are being urged to move fast, ensure the boy’s safety and hold the perpetrator accountable. In a time when the nation is spotlighting GBV, this incident shows why the fight must continue.
