WITH the annual King Mzilikazi commemorations fast approaching, Zimpapers, in partnership with KIMMRI Publicity and Resources Mobilisation, will host a seminar on Friday at the Large City Hall in Bulawayo, to revive King Mzilikazi’s legacy and remind the nation why his story deserves renewed attention.

Running under the theme “Reclaiming African Heritage through the Life and Legacy of King Mzilikazi”, the seminar, scheduled from 9:30am to 1:00pm, is open to all who are interested in learning more about King Mzilikazi’s life and enduring impact.

Invited participants include historians and researchers, cultural and traditional custodians, policymakers, civil society organisations, members of academia, Bulawayo residents and representatives from various Government ministries.

Topics to be discussed during the seminar will include the relevance of King Mzilikazi’s legacy in contemporary leadership and nation-building, the promotion and preservation of African oral histories and traditions, and fostering academic and cultural dialogue around indigenous leadership and governance, among other key issues.

Member of the royal family, Prince Zwide Khumalo, emphasised the importance of reviving King Mzilikazi’s legacy, describing him as a nation-builder whose contributions must not be overlooked. He highlighted the king’s commitment to peace among diverse ethnic groups — a principle Zimbabweans should continue to uphold today.

“As a direct descendant of King Mzilikazi, I value the commemorations and celebrations of our great leader because they are important to us, the Khumalos and to the entire Zimbabwean nation. They remind us of how great a leader King Mzilikazi was.

“He was a cultural giant, who built this nation by uniting people from different backgrounds to live as one. Even after his passing in 1868, the nation continued to thrive because of his enduring legacy of unity,” said Prince Zwide.

One of the event organisers, Mpikelelo Khumalo, said preparations for the seminar are progressing well. He added that the event is open to everyone who values King Mzilikazi’s story and history — a devoted leader who championed peace throughout his kingdom.

“Preparations for the seminar are at an advanced stage, and tomorrow we look forward to welcoming people from Bulawayo and surrounding areas who cherish King Mzilikazi’s legacy, as well as those eager to learn more about him.

“This seminar is open to all, regardless of ethnic or racial background. We’ve designed the event to be inclusive. It’s not just a Khumalo affair — it’s for the nation. That’s why we’ll have speakers from the royal family and others with expertise in historical discourse, such as Sipho Gama.

“We’ve also invited speakers like Chief Mathema of Gwanda and Chief Fuyana of Matopo. These traditional leaders play a vital role in guiding our nation and are instrumental in helping us revive King Mzilikazi’s story and legacy,” said Mpikelelo.

Sipho Gama, chairman of the Mthwakazi kaMzilikazi Cultural Association, said his presentation will focus on the importance of identity and understanding one’s roots and direction.

“Mzilikazi was a great king who took pride in his identity as a Khumalo and in the nation he built. He was an inclusive leader who welcomed everyone. My presentation will focus on rediscovering our identity as Ndebele people and as a nation,” said Gama.
