More organisations have come in to support the Government’s efforts in supporting the victims of the road accident that killed 25 people near the Lutumba tollgate on Thursday last week following the collision of a Beitbridge bound bus and a commercial lorry that was heading to Chirundu.
Following the accidents on Thursday more stakeholders have come in with various compassionate support to those hospitalised and the grieving families.
Government is already accosting state assisted funerals to the deceased most of whom were buried at the weekend with 11 of the deceased being Beitbridge residents.
Discovery Ambulance Services has offered to transfer all the patients who are hospitalised and need special medical attention in Harare.
So far they have taken four of the 29 people admitted at the Beitbridge hospital who have expressed an interest to get specialised medical attention in Harare.
According to Mr Elliot Chivige, the practitioner in charge at Discovery Ambulance Services, the company has undertaken to pay for all the medical bills for those in need of help.
“We have decided to complement what is already being done by the Government in the aftermath of this tragedy. As an organisation we are offering to transport all those needing special medical attention in Harare where we will pay all the medical bills and provide the consumables they will need until they return to their homes,” he said
Beitbridge Mayor, Councllior Peter Pirato Mafuta who also with other stakeholders mobilised material support including private ambulances for those injured and the hospital staff said it was pleasing to see more players stepping in to assist the grieving families and the survivors.
“We are grateful to the support from all the stakeholders and as a community a dark cloud is hovering over our heads following the death of 11 of our residents from that road accident,” he said.
The Zimbabwe Passengers Transport Organisation (ZPTO) chairman, Dr Samson Nhanhanga has passed condolences to the grieving families and called on public transport operators to address the issues of speeding by most drivers.
He also delivered USD11 000 to the Government to assist with the burial for the deceased.
The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe said it will cover medical and funeral expenses of all the passengers, while the traffic safety council has given an assortment of hampers to those hospitalised.
