MOTORISTS and pedestrians were this morning left stranded after Mtshabezi Bridge in Gwanda District, one of the major entry points to the town, was flooded due to heavy rains which have persisted for a week.

The bridge links the town to Blanket Mine and the Maphisa area.

In a statement after a visit to the bridge, Minister of State for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Albert Nguluvhe said there is an urgent need for the bridge to be upgraded as it is substandard.

“This morning, I visited the Mtshabezi River crossing point, a critical route connecting Blanket Mine, Maphisa and Gwanda town. Unfortunately, vehicles from both sides were unable to cross due to the current state of the bridge. This is particularly concerning as the road is being repaired to link Maphisa, the venue for next year’s National Independence Day celebrations.

“People from Matabeleland South and other provinces will face significant challenges accessing the venue if the bridge is not upgraded ahead of time. I’m appealing to the Ministry of Transport and Infrustructure Development to intervene and construct a bigger and more durable bridge to resolve this issue. As a leader, I will continue to push for solutions to ensure that our roads support the province’s growth and development,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Gwanda District Civil Protection Committee has issued a stern warning against crossing flooded rivers to avoid loss of life.

In a statement, Gwanda District Risk Reduction (DRR) focal person, Mr Awakhiwe Moyo, said the district is experiencing heavy rains which have left many rivers flooded.

“We caution the public to exercise extreme caution as rivers are currently full due to heavy rainfall. Despite warnings, some individuals are recklessly attempting to cross flooded rivers, putting their lives at risk. The Zimbabwe Republic Police are fully deployed to enforce safety measures.

“We urge everyone to avoid taking unnecessary risks. Mtshabezi Bridge is currently overflowing, and several people have been arrested for attempting to cross despite warnings. Reports indicate that some individuals engaged in illegal mining are stranded in various areas of Gwanda due to flooded rivers. We implore everyone to prioritise their safety and well-being,” he said.
