At the Anti-Sanctions Gala held in Esigodini last month, Simon Mutambi, a sungura artiste from Beatrice, quickly became a crowd favourite. With his exceptional guitar skills, dynamic stage presence, powerful vocals, and skillful bass guitar playing, he captivated the audience with his infectious energy.

The crowd was so moved that they even called for him to extend his set, a testament to the impact of his performance.

Mutambi’s rendition of “Zvinamatire, zvinamatire kuti Mwari wangu ini ndinemakuhwa” stood out, delivering a message on the destructive nature of gossip – a theme that resonated deeply with attendees. His backing vocalists enriched the performance with harmonious support, while his bass guitar mastery and ability to mimic intricate riffs with his voice showcased his creativity.

Mutambi’s humble demeanour and warm smile further endeared him to the audience.

In a post-gala interview with Chronicle Showbiz, Mutambi reflected on his musical journey and dedication to his craft.
“I started recording music in 2009, and Nicholas Zakariah helped me perfect my guitar playing,” he shared.

“I now have 12 albums; three with seven songs each, and the other nine with six each. I believe in myself, and I know that when I step on stage, I can deliver. It’s all because I practice to be perfect.”

Mutambi also spoke about his commitment to addressing social issues through his music.
“My strength lies in my bass guitar play and conveying messages that resonate with the current context,” he added.

He expressed gratitude for support from Sungura legends like Alick Macheso, who has reassured him of his ability to carry the Sungura torch.

Another unforgettable performance came from Jeys Marabini. Known for his captivating blend of dance, guitar playing, and powerful vocals, Marabini held the audience spellbound with his electrifying performance. His song “Mafikizolo” echoed the gala’s theme, addressing the struggles of citizens facing external pressures, while “Yamitha Kanjani Intombi” confronted the issue of underage relationships, boldly calling out exploitation and vulnerability.
