IN a heart-breaking incident, a three-year-old boy who died after he gulped a few sips of juice was buried on Saturday at Luveve cemetery in Bulawayo.
The grandmother of the deceased, Jennifer Nxumalo, however, said they were still waiting for the post-mortem results.
“We are still waiting for a post-mortem results to know what caused the death of my grandson,” she said.
The lad, Avuyile Mpengesi, died last week on Tuesday at their family home in Makokoba suburb after his grandfather Shepherd Mhlanga (53) gave him a juice.
He gulped a few sips before he handed it to his 10-year-old sister who took two sips and spit on the floor complaining that the juice was bitter. Their grandfather said he picked up the juice at Renkini Long Distance Bus Terminus.
According to Nxumalo, soon after that the boy wriggled in agony.
“At that moment, the three-year-old tumbled to the ground and wriggled on the floor. He became dizzy before he fell unconscious. His sister complained of dizziness and started to vomit. The boy was pronounced dead by the ambulance crew.
The 10-year-old was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital for medical attention and spent three days before she was discharged on Saturday and is recovering well at home,” she said.
Jennifer said Shepherd Mhlanga, the grandfather who came with the juice, was quizzed about where he got the drink.
“He told us that he picked it up at Renkini Bus Terminus where he sells his wares,” she said.
The incident was reported to the police and confirmed by Bulawayo Provincial Spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube.
