WELLINGTON Varevi made history on Saturday, clinching his fourth straight Coca-Cola Four-Minute Mile title at the ZITF Conference Centre.
The Black Rhinos ace clocked 4 minutes 28.81 seconds, easily brushing aside the competition, with Elijah Mabhunu (4:23.79) and Munyaradzi Zizhou (4:21.31) trailing behind.
But once again, the ghost of Gray Mavhera’s 3:58 record loomed large.
For 28 years, Zimbabwe’s finest have tried to break the legendary mark — and failed.
Is the national record cursed?
Varevi, despite his dominance, is still a few precious seconds away from immortality.
Will anyone ever conquer the most stubborn record in Zimbabwean athletics? Only time will tell.
