TINY cricket bats. Giant dreams.
Budding cricket stars from Bulawayo and Victoria Falls are swinging their way to glory as the Old Mutual/CABS Centre of Cricket Excellence ramps up preparations for a sizzling schools showdown.
The big clash is set for August 2 in Bulawayo, marking the end of a high-energy second term packed with coaching drills, friendly fire and fierce talent spotting.
Driving the vision is Joseph Rego, the man behind the magic. He’s thrilled with the turnout and passion from schools in both cities.
“We’re seeing real grassroots development when kids from all walks of life get the chance to shine,” said Rego. “Thanks to Old Mutual and CABS, the future of Zimbabwean cricket is looking bright.”
The sponsors are equally bowled over by the progress. Their statement gushed with pride, saying the initiative is giving township kids access to quality coaching, kit and facilities.
“The tournament is not just about winning. It’s about changing lives,” read the statement. “It gives kids a chance to dream big and play for their school, club or even Zimbabwe — and do it all with pride and a smile.”
Girls are also making their mark, with the programme pushing to increase female participation and break the bias in the gentleman’s game.
Professional coaches and umpires have been roped in to ensure that what starts in dusty suburbs could end on world-class cricket pitches.
The countdown to the finals has begun. The next Chevrons might just be among these pint-sized power hitters.
