ZIMBABWE is hosting a Southern African Development Community (SADC) prisons and correctional training programme aimed at equipping prison administrators with management skills that foster the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners.

The event is being held at a hotel in Bulawayo.

The SADC Secretariat is leading the engagements, with the aim of equipping senior officers with leadership skills, knowledge on mainstreaming gender and human security issues, peace-building efforts, and discussions on key plans, strategies, policies, guidelines, and their implementation in corrections.

Issues related to the correction of inmates are at the centre of today’s engagements.
Senior Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) officers are participating in the five-day workshop.

ZPCS Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu says the meeting should foster the transformation of prison systems.

He emphasised that the main thrust of the prison system is rehabilitation and reintegration.
“ZPCS will this year launch a foundation on the reintegration of prisoners. ZPCS will be inviting various stakeholders to partner with it in implementing the reintegration programme,” he said.
He added that leadership will be a key focus, with the aim of setting an example.
