repair of major leaks on the water mains feeding the Letombo reservoirs.
Up to 20 million litres of treated water were being lost daily over the past two weeks, costing the council about US$16 000 everyday.
Harare Water director, Engineer Christopher Zvobgo, yesterday said they had successfully fixed the major leaks along Little Marimba River in Westwood early in the morning.
“We finished the job around 3am and started pumping to Letombo immediately.
“Areas supplied by Letombo should start accessing water earliest this evening (last night) and latest this morning (today),” he said. Eastern and northern suburbs have been hard-hit by water shortages, thereby boosting businesses of companies that sell bulk water.
Trucks with water tanks have become commonplace in Highlands, Greendale, Kambanji, Glen Lorne, and Chisipiti.
In other affected suburbs, such as Mabvuku and Tafara, some residents had resorted to unprotected water sources.
Eng Zvobgo said levels in the Letombo reservoirs were steadily rising.
Earlier in the week city spokesman Mr Leslie Gwindi said the pipes were over 20-years-old and needed replacing.
Zimbabwe experienced a devastating cholera outbreak in 2008, with 4 000-plus deaths being attributed to water access issues.
