The trial of seven suspected robbers who stole US$412 798 from Waverly Blankets meant for banking failed to start yesterday because one of the suspects who was shot is yet to receive medical attention. The matter was deferred to October 17 to allow Kudakwashe Brian Mungadzi access to a specialist.
Mungadzi (39) yesterday appeared on court with six other co-accused —Freddie Tsvarai (34), Hoosein Karim (63), Winnock Hahlani (41), James Tabu (28), Amos Ndhlamuti (30) and Yvette Johnson Don (43).
Allegations against the seven arose sometime in May this year after Don approached Karim and told him that there was going to be a movement of a large sum of money from her company to the bank.
Karim reportedly approached Andrew Mugarapanyama who is still at large with the plan to rob Maureen Muparadzi, an accountant at Waverly Blankets.
It is the State’s case that Muparadzi usually took money to the bank every Mondays without escort.
The gang allegedly looked for a firearm which they used to threaten Muparadzi to surrender her bag containing US$412 798.
After stealing the money, the gang sped off in their getaway cars.
Following a tip off that Tsvarai connived with the robbers, she was the first to be arrested and $25 300 was recovered.
