Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday hailed President Robert Mugabe as a unique leader with the people’s interests at heart, adding that his office existed to serve the President.
VP Mphoko, who is on a nationwide tour to gather information on issues affecting the general populace, said this in Guruve where he visited the Shinje Dam construction site and Eureka Gold Mine.
Plans to construct Shinje Dam on the Shinje River are at an advanced stage, and the development will boost the district’s sugarcane, wheat and maize production in line with Zim-Asset.
Eureka Gold Mine, which has been lying idle for years, has a monthly production capacity of 60 kilogrammes and will provide employment to hundreds of people in Guruve and the surrounding areas.
Addressing hundreds of locals at Shinje Business Centre, VP Mphoko also implored Members of Parliament to serve the electorate.
“MPs should be in constant touch with their constituencies. They should come back to their people, hear their needs and take action.”
“Vice Presidents and Deputy Ministers do not have offices. Vice President Mnangagwa and I are just the President’s foot soldiers.
“The President has love for the people of Zimbabwe and is concerned about the ordinary person, whether they benefited from the land reform or not.”
He added: “The President wants to know if people have benefited from the agriculture equipment that we received from Brazil, that is why he has sent us on this tour to assess such issues.
“I am not doing this as VP Mphoko, but as a task that President Mugabe has sent me to perform.”
The VP was also briefed on issues affecting Mashonaland Central – mainly shortage of irrigation water, neglect of war veterans and the rising number children dropping out of school.
VP Mphoko paid school fees for several children in the area and pledged to support more in the future.
He also pledged to support youth projects like poultry and gardening.
The VP was accompanied by Zanu PF National Commissar Cde Saviour Kasukuwere, Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Minister Advocate Martin Dinha and Zanu PF Mashonaland Central Chairman Dickson Mafios, among others.
