In a passionate plea, popular Zim dancehall artists have called on fans and critics to stop associating the genre with drug use.
Following a trending comment about the Zim dancehall Cup Clash by Dj Fydale The Don which reads:
“Mazoti ari kutanga kuenda ku Rehab ndiani.”
Chipazi, Kiddo Bang, Silent Killer, and Bazooker expressed frustration at the constant negative stereotypes surrounding Zimdancehall musicians.
In an Interview with H-Metro, Chipazi said:
“People think we’re all about drugs and craziness, but that’s just not true.
“When we’re on stage, we’re not high, we’re just creative and passionate about Zim dancehall.”
Kiddo Bang argued that the genre’s energetic and unconventional style is often misunderstood as a sign of drug abuse.
“Being crazy when singing is just creativity, and it’s worked for many artists before but instead of being praised for our originality, we’re told we need rehab.”
Silent Killer pointed out the hypocrisy of critics who focus on Zim dancehall musicians while ignoring substance abuse in other industries.
“There are many drug addicts in the corporate world, but no one talks about it because they wear suits and ties but when we express ourselves differently, we’re judged and stigmatized.”
Bazooker added:
“We’re not drug addicts, we’re artists so we deserve respect for our creativity and passion.”
