aspirations of all Zimbabweans irrespective of political affiliation.
Cde Khaya Moyo, who was appointed as a non-constituency senator in March, said this while contributing to the Presidential address in his maiden speech in the Upper House.
“Madam president it is pertinent to underline that Parliament does not make laws for Zanu-PF, MDC-T or MDC but for all Zimbabweans.
“It is expected to serve the nation in its entirety across the broad political spectrum.
“Posterity will judge us harshly if we behaved in a contrary manner.
“Undoubtedly our people would feel short-changed for they know Zimbabwe is not for sale,” he said.
Cde Khaya Moyo, who is also Zanu-PF national chairman, said Parliament was a platform for constructive debate.
“Parliament is indeed a forum for public debate.
“While it offers a forum for vibrant debate and non-abusive exchanges, honourable senators emanating from diverse socio-political back- grounds are key to the fashioning of a conducive environment for civilised discourse.
“This august house must adequately address the aspirations of our people and remain a bedrock player in the promotion and fostering of a positive and salutary image of Zimbabwe and its people both at the domestic and international fora.
“We have only one Zimbabwe, our Zimbabwe free and sovereign,” he said.
He said unity, peace and development should prevail in the country as Zimbabwe’s birth had been achieved after a protracted struggle.
“We are a free people, an independent and sovereign nation whose birth came after a protracted liberation struggle in which thousands perished, many maimed, homes destroyed, property looted and many more traumatised.
“We dare not betray the liberators, dead or living. Zimbabwe is free forever,” he said.
Cde Khaya Moyo said parliamentarians should remain focused on challenges bedevilling the country.
He said it was imperative that the constitution-making process was successfully completed and free and fair elections be held afterwards.
“The illegal economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the West must go as demanded by all civilised conduct,” he said.
Cde Khaya Moyo thanked Sadc, the AU, Non Aligned Movement and other progressive organisations and countries for standing by Zimbabwe in its times of need and said the only way forward was for fellow African countries to assist Zimbabwe.
