MBIRA artist and girl-child rights defender, Florence “Lioness/Shumbakadzi” Nyamazana, reckons women should be celebrated every day.
The Norton based songwriter and composer said people should not wait for March to start observing women’s month.
“We are a bit special and our value is sometimes recognised when we are gone,” she told H-Metro.
She said women deserve to be respected to help them reach their potential.
“We are underrated in most sectors but we can also do better in male-dominated fields if we are given the opportunities to express ourselves.
“It’s not like we are demanding competition with men but we simply need equal opportunities to contribute to nation building,” she said.
The 39-year-old singer, who has a soft spot for helping less-privileged children, added:
“There is quite a lot happening in showbiz and I will not be deterred from fulfilling my potential.
“I know it’s hard for us but I will keep soldering on because there are people who look up to me for survival.
“I’m not only looking after my own children but I am also into charity where I help the needy, especially orphans with the proceeds I get in music,” she said.
Lioness believes music promoters are biased towards established male artists.
“Being the women’s month, we call upon real promoters to come forward and hold, at least, one big show for women.
“It would be nice as well if they included us in their events so that we participate as well.
“We can’t afford to be a nation, which does not support its female artists who represent mothers out there,” she said.
Lioness is one of the most active female artists holding shows regularly.
The others are Diana “Mangwenya” Samkange, Selmor Mtukudzi, Sasha Amadhuve, Feli Nandi and Tamy Moyo.
On the gospel scene, Agatha Murudzwa, Janet Manyowa, Dorcas Moyo, Rumbi Zvirikuzhe and Fungisai Zvakavapano are some of the consistent artists.
