Talking Football with Cosmas Zulu
MODERN football is a very big subject which we must not take for granted and put people in influential positions who do not have a football background. This is the reason our football is failing to progress fast. I will explain to you a few examples why we need technical fundis in our executive committees.
1. The technical fundi will know and advise the executive committee on issues.
a) How do you interview the head coach, what is it you want from him?
b) The role of the assistant coach.
c) How to build a competitive squad putting into consideration players’ potential for success in competitive football. The level of performance at which a player will perform, whether the player’s basic development was accomplished.
d) The understanding of match reports.
e) How to conduct match postmortem meetings with technical staff.
f) Preparation of home/away games you can realise you cannot win league championship if you do not win 95 percent of home games and at least win 75 percent of your away games.
Look, I am not saying we do not have good administrators, they can do better if they can be given some workshops so that they can understand the core business of soccer in their roles within the club. Because to be a good executive committee, you will not be judged because your financial report is good, no it’s the good results of winning trophies.
We are going off season.
Coaches
Please understand this, there is no such thing as off season. This is the time you are supposed to plan for the coming season.
For example
1. Coming up with what type of players you want.
2. Who are they, you start to plan to give them what we call active rest during this time eg John is overweight, he should not eat fatty foods during the festive season. You should take his weight now and say I want you to come 10kg less than what you are. Peter has no speed, go and do some sprints – shuttles -20 repeats in 15 minutes. I will test you when we come back. Joshua I want you to go cycling 20km once a week because your muscle build up is small.
Coaches you don’t eat today and expect to be fat the following day, to be fat it’s the food you have been eating in the last six months, to get fit is a process. A player’s potential for success in competitive football is determined by inborn qualities that contribute to over 60 percent of his performance.
The level of performance of a player is mainly decided, first by the degree which is his/her best basic development was accomplished. Second and equally important is the relevancy and quality of high performance and training and competition required in competitive football.
The unacceptable practice of less knowledgeable coaches who concentrate their training effort in working extensively on the players weaknesses while neglecting their inborn values is the main reason of many players not reaching their full potential. The predicament has to be eliminated from current coaching practices.
To eliminate any confusion and damage done to players, common understanding of the nature of players and their inborn football traits, individual team, geographical region must be reflected in the respective coaching concept and methodology.
Until next week where I will be writing about criteria used to get competitive players, setting training objectives.
