Big Brother Africa – Hotshots has opened with mixed fortunes for Zimbabwe, as the country housemate that we all made such a fuss over slapped us in the face with a lacklustre performance and the dark horse proved to be the one to put our money on.
Instead of shining in the talent show meant to introduce and endear the housemates to the audience Butterphly really made a mess.
She recited a poem but the effort was simply dreadful as she came across like a wanna be rapper at amateur night.
The 44 percent that Butterphly got from the live audience was quite generous in relation to her below mediocre performance, but that was the least mark awarded which means she is on the list of the first evictions.
Obviously Zimbabweans are disappointed.
Even though fingers are crossed that she will bounce back, many fans have begun to question the suitability of the DJ for the show as she just seems to have failed to make the grade.
Compatriot JJ was also obviously equally nervous but he acquitted himself well and fans are now asking how Butterphly could be that gauche.
Could it be that as a radio presenter she is used to being behind the mic and not in front of the camera and the leap was just too big for her?
Or could it be that whoever made the selection sold us a dummy as this housemate’s stage fright seems to be lasting way beyond a reasonable time frame?
She somehow manages to be ever scarce and rarely chats much, a problem noted by previous BBA contestant Pokello Nare on her Facebook page:
“Butterphly we are still trying to locate her or hear her. We only catch glimpses of her standing in the kitchen but still no action from her,” reads the post.
So if this is a game plan, then it is unlikely to work.
But in all fairness when comparing Butterphly to JJ we need to remember that the man has got some experience to fall back on.
He fits into the house like it is home and the housemates are his best friends. The heartbreaking story about his life which led to some tears could have earned him some emotional attachment across Africa and if it is a strategy then we give it the thumbs up.
As a country, we would prefer not to have Butterphly rival the record previously set by Tecla Mazanhi in getting evicted in the shortest time possible, so we pray that she avoids Sunday evictions and we will support her as much as we can.
But if by some miracle she remains in the game, then she needs to start delivering and not take our patriotic allegiance for granted.
