The Covid -19 pandemic has greatly affected and altered the socio-economic and political activities of the world within a short space of time.
New and more variants of the coronavirus are spreading throughout the world.
One of the variants, Delta, which is currently the most transmissible of the variants has been detected in 24 countries.
Currently Zimbabwe is battling with the third wave of the pandemic.
According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, (MOHCC), as at July 18, the country recorded 83 619 confirmed Covid-19 cases, including 53 453 recoveries and 2 622.
Analysing the statistics, there is an upsurge in the infection rates and deaths taking place in the country as a result of complacency and ignorance.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has put different measures to minimise the spread of the Covid -19 pandemic.
But people are continuing defying the health protocols and national measures put in place to contain the pandemic.
Most people are roaming the streets without properly wearing masks and some do not even wear them at all.
They only properly wear them when they see police officers in fear of being caught at the wrong side of the law.
Sanitising hands and social distancing is now a thing of the past.
The health protocols implemented by WHO are scientifically proven to contain the pandemic but people are defying them.
According to the WHO Africa, wearing a mask reduces Covid -19 transmission by up to 80 percent.
According to WHO, the pandemic is transmitted by droplets that spreads when people talk, sneeze or cough and wearing a mask creates a physical barrier that catches these droplets.
Wearing a mask is a simple way to show that you care about yourself and other people around you.
As Covid -19 increases in the country, it is important to note that wearing masks alone cannot protect one from the Covid -19 but there is need to maintain at least 1 metre distance from another person and washing of hands frequently and thoroughly with running water.
People should also go out in their numbers and be vaccinated.
It is the duty of everyone to fight the pandemic and it starts with complying with the WHO health protocols and national measures put by the government.
