Wellness takes centre stage in Nkulumane

THE usually quiet streets of Nkulumane echoed with laughter, cheers, and the sound of pounding feet last weekend as scores of residents turned out for the Charleston Trust Marathon 5km Fun Run.

From seasoned runners chasing personal bests to parents walking alongside their children and fitness enthusiasts soaking up the vibrant atmosphere, the event delivered exactly what its organisers had envisioned — a community united by the simple goal of embracing healthier lifestyles.

Held under the theme “Health Awareness”, the marathon transformed Charleston Trust Primary School into a hub of energy, wellness, and togetherness as people of all ages answered the call to:

“Run for health. Run for life. Run together.”

The route started and finished at the school in Nkulumane 10, taking participants on a five-kilometre journey through the suburb past familiar landmarks, including Nketa High School, Nketa 8 Shopping Centre, and Munyoro Shopping Centre, before they made their way back to a warm reception from cheering supporters.

However, the morning was about much more than crossing the finish line.

Participants also benefited from free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, while a lively Zumba session led by Fitness Squad trainers kept energy levels high, with many joining in after completing the run.

The combination of exercise, music, and health education created a festive atmosphere that appealed to both the young and the old.

Beyond promoting physical fitness, the event also highlighted the importance of raising awareness about conditions that continue to affect many Zimbabwean families, including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and mental health challenges.

Charleston Trust Primary School administrator Beverly Manyiwa said the event exceeded expectations and demonstrated the community’s willingness to support initiatives that promote healthy living.

“Our health awareness initiative was a huge success. We are humbled by the overwhelming support we received from the community. We would like to thank our parents, learners, residents, sponsors, and volunteers who all played a part in making the event a success.

“We hope next year’s event will attract even more participants. This initiative is about encouraging healthier lifestyles and bringing the community together, and we believe it will continue to grow from strength to strength,” said Manyiwa.

Long after the last participants had crossed the finish line, many remained at the venue interacting, taking photographs, and celebrating a morning that blended fitness, fun, and community spirit.

The successful event underlined the growing popularity of wellness activities in Bulawayo and demonstrated how sport continues to unite communities while inspiring people to adopt healthier lifestyles. Judging by Saturday’s impressive turnout, the Charleston Trust Marathon has firmly established itself as a community event that residents can look forward to in the years ahead.
