THE race to crown Zimbabwe’s ultimate pool champion has intensified following the successful conclusion of the Carling Black Label National Pool Tournament regional qualifiers, which attracted unprecedented participation across the country.
The annual competition, which this year expanded to an impressive 31 regions, drew thousands of players, fans, and local communities, further cementing pool’s growing status as one of Zimbabwe’s most popular recreational sports.
Tournament organisers hailed this year’s edition as one of the biggest and most competitive in recent memory, with participants displaying remarkable skill, discipline, and professionalism throughout the qualifying stages.
Beyond the excitement on the pool tables, the tournament generated significant economic activity in host communities. Local businesses and traders benefited from increased customer traffic and spending during the regional events.
“We are proud of the progress we continue to see in the sport. The growth in participation and the elevated level of play reflect the passion and commitment from players across the country. We commend everyone who took part and contributed to making this tournament a success,” said Delta Beverages Marketing Manager for the Lagers Business Unit, Kundayi Mawema.
One of the standout features of this year’s competition has been the continued rise in women’s participation, with organisers noting steady year-on-year growth in female competitors. The development has been hailed as a major step towards promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities within the sport.
Attention now shifts to the highly anticipated national finals, scheduled for 11 July in Masvingo, where 80 finalists, comprising both male and female players, will battle for national glory and lucrative prizes.
The stakes are high, with the overall winner set to walk away with a US2 500 cash prize and a brand-new pool table, while the runner-up will pocket US1 500. Third place carries a US1 000 reward, with fourth place earning US500.
With regional champions preparing for one final showdown, all roads now lead to Masvingo for what promises to be a thrilling spectacle of precision, nerves, and championship ambition.
As the tournament slogan boldly declares: “Champions Deserve a Champion Beer.”
