He urged the officers to continue to be loyal and patriotic.
Comm-Gen Chihuri was speaking at the funeral parade for ZRP director of music, Chief Superintendent Davis Chamutinya, held in Harare yesterday.
Chief Supt Chamutinya died at his Nyamuseve Farm in Guruve on Monday after a heart failure.
He was 55.
Comm-Gen Chihuri described Chief Supt Cham-utinya as a humble senior officer who was completely “absorbed in his work”.
“This can be attested by those who had the privilege to sample the melodious music by the Police Band on diverse occasions such as passout parades, State occasions, weddings or civic occasions,” he said.
Comm-Gen Chihuri said Chief Supt Chamutinya was not scornful of authority and whole-heartedly performed his duties as a bondservant of the Lord.
“The late senior officer’s positive attitude towards work and his dignified character is a great character to many,” he said.
“I say this because it has escaped the notice of a lot of people that police officers are bond servants of the Lord and country.”
Comm-Gen Chihuri said Chief Supt Chamutinya set up police band structures and trained police officers from other countries such as Swaziland, Botswana and Namibia in music. Chief Supt Chamutinya was born on July 7 1957 in Guruve and his primary education was interrupted by the liberation war in the area.
He was attested into the ZRP as a Constable on November 5, 1980 and rose through the ranks to become Chief Superintendent in 2003.
Upon completion of police training, he joined Support Unit Band section as a bass guitar player.
Chief Supt Chamutinya also served in Kosovo under the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission.
He will be buried in Guruve today .
Chief Supt Chamutinya is survived by his wife Rosemary and four children – Olivia (30), Ivy (25), Victoria (22) and Noel (11).
