WE’RE ON THE RISE, NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT

ZIMBABWE’S rising profile on the global tourism stage received a major boost after the country was named Destination of the Year – Natural Wonders at the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association Awards held in Germany.

The celebration was made even sweeter by the recognition of Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi, who was honoured with the Tourism Minister of the Year (Africa) award.

These accolades are not just trophies; they represent a powerful global endorsement of Zimbabwe as one of the world’s most extraordinary travel destinations.

For many years, Zimbabwe’s tourism potential has been widely acknowledged but sometimes underappreciated internationally.

These awards shine a bright spotlight on the country’s remarkable natural beauty and confirms what many travellers have long known — Zimbabwe is a land of breathtaking landscapes, unique wildlife, and unforgettable experiences.

At the centre of this recognition is the country’s unmatched collection of natural wonders.

The most iconic of them all is the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The Falls continue to captivate visitors from across the globe with their thunderous power and spectacular beauty.

For many tourists, witnessing the mighty Zambezi River plunge dramatically into the gorge is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

But Zimbabwe’s natural appeal extends far beyond Victoria Falls.

We boast world-class national parks such as Hwange National Park, famous for its vast elephant herds and diverse wildlife. Tourists can enjoy thrilling safaris, birdwatching, and the rare opportunity to experience nature in landscapes that remain largely unspoiled.

Equally significant is Zimbabwe’s rich historical heritage.

Sites like Great Zimbabwe offer visitors a glimpse into Africa’s impressive pre-colonial civilisation.

The massive stone structures stand as proof of advanced architecture and trade networks that flourished centuries ago.

Such historical treasures add depth to Zimbabwe’s tourism offering, blending natural beauty with cultural discovery.

Minister Rwodzi’s recognition as Tourism Minister of the Year (Africa) is also an important milestone.

Since assuming office, she has played a visible role in promoting Zimbabwe as a premier travel destination.

Her leadership has focused on strengthening international partnerships, attending global tourism expos, and promoting the country’s brand on the world stage.

Tourism is one of Zimbabwe’s most important economic pillars. The sector supports thousands of jobs across hotels, lodges, transport services, tour operations, and local craft markets.

Global recognition like this helps attract more visitors, which in turn boosts local businesses and creates new opportunities for communities across the country. However, such recognition also brings responsibility.

Maintaining Zimbabwe’s reputation as a top natural destination requires continued investment in conservation, infrastructure, and visitor experiences.

Protecting wildlife habitats, preserving cultural sites, and ensuring sustainable tourism practices must remain priorities. Ultimately, these awards reflect more than international applause; they represent confidence in Zimbabwe’s tourism future. The country has always possessed extraordinary natural wonders — now the world is acknowledging them in a big way.

For Zimbabweans, this moment is a reminder that their homeland remains one of the planet’s true gems.

With continued dedication and smart investment, Zimbabwe’s tourism sector can grow even stronger, welcoming travellers eager to experience the magic that earned it the title of Destination of the Year – Natural Wonders.
