WESTERN Commonage sealed the league and cup double when they claimed the 2015 ZRP Bulawayo Province Townshend and Butcher Football League by four points.
The Malvern Mzezewa captained cops won the ZRP Bulawayo Commander’s Cup last week by beating Queens Park Police Station 2-0 in the final played at Ross Camp Stadium and watched by the acting officer commanding Bulawayo province Chris Gora.
To cap a fine season, West Comm dispatched Tshabalala 3-0 in their final league match of the season on Wednesday while their closest rivals Nkulumane succumbed to a 1-3 defeat to Njube to finish the season in second spot.
Nkulumane though will take solace in that they provided the league’s Golden Boot winner Byton Sibanda, who scored 21 goals.
“We are proposing next Wednesday as our prize giving ceremony where the top three teams will get their prizes.
“We are also looking for a sponsor to fund our two-day top eight tournament, which hopefully will be held before the end of November since December is a festive month and the details will be busy with their core policing business,” said Fiso Siziba, vice-chairman of the police league.
The football league is part of the many sporting activities undertaken by members of the police force during their Wednesday sports days as a way of keeping the officers physically and mentally fit in the execution of their policing duties.
Other sporting codes that the law enforcers engage in include chess, netball and volleyball. Tennis is still in its infancy, although the reigning national police tennis champion Maria Ndlovu is from Bulawayo.
