Western Panthers triumph over Gweru Sports Club

WESTERN Panthers picked up their second win of the season in the National Rugby League when they prevailed over visiting Gweru Sports Club in a National Rugby League fixture played at Hartsfield Rugby Ground in Bulawayo yesterday.

Twelve tries were recorded yesterday with seven of those five pointers scored by Panthers while Gweru crossed the line five times. Panthers collected five log points with the win with Gweru picking up one point for scoring more than four tries.

Panthers led 24-15 at the break but did allow Gweru to get closer in the second half before the home team killed off the match as a contest towards the end.

Winger Mayibongwe Ncube scored three tries for Panthers, kicked the same number of conversions, loose forward Manfred Musendo went over the line twice, centre Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu had one try and one conversion, scrumhalf George Hlatshwayo notched up one try while lock George Madzikatire had one try.

For Gweru Sports Club, Kilvan Magunje scored two tries, player coach Zwelonke Mloyiswa, winger Tawanda Chakani and replacement Joseph Mudzingwa scored the tries.

In other NRL matches played yesterday, Old Miltonians recorded their first win of the season when they defeated Mutare Sports Club 18-15 in Mutare, Harare Sports Club won 20-19 at OGs while defending NRL champions Old Hararians drubbed Zvishavane Bulls 84-3 in another match played at OGs.

Meanwhile, in national schools results obtained from the matches played yesterday Falcon College beat Prince Edward 21-19 at PE, Christian Brothers College lost 33-5 at home to Saint Georges, Saint Johns defeated last year’s national schools champions Peterhouse 20-13 while in Masvingo Kyle College won 13-12 over Churchill.clrd
