What is depression?

Signs and Symptoms
Depression presents with a low mood, loss of interest in everything, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings that life is hopeless and worthless.
In severe cases, depression can lead to suicide and is responsible for 850 000 deaths every year.

Causes
l Genetics: If you have someone in your immediate family with the disorder, you are two or three times likely to develop depression at some point in your life.
l Economic disadvantages for example poverty
l Exposure to violence
l Separation or divorce
l Chronic illnesses, e.g. cancer, HIV/Aids
l Loss of job
l Failure of examinations
l Bereavement
l Other social factors such as loneliness, marital problems, unemployment and failure to be promoted.
l Drug abuse

Getting Help
Depression can be successfully treated. It is necessary to get help from your nearest health facility or health care provider in your community.
Talking is important in managing depression. Whatever the cause, talk about it with someone you feel comfortable with. It can be a friend, parent, workmate, counsellor or religious minister.
