What to look for when buying coated steel roofing

What one should look and ask for when buying coated steel roofing:

  • The thickness of the steel sheet but more importantly the thickness of the protective coating of zinc on both the galvanised and pre-painted steel roofing like IBR, corrugation.
  • Tile and Widespan IBR?
  • The paint system used?
  • Single or double, and the thickness of paint film?
  • Double Coat paint is much superior to single coat paint.
  • Is the profile in standard shape — IBR standard shape — corrugation, standard shape.

Widespan IBR and Tie? — Non-standard profiles may be either weaker or un-economical (their per metre cost may be the same or lower but total cost for roofing the same area may be more).

The price per square metre? Comparing running metre prices is always misleading as you look only at the length and ignore the width. You will need fewer sheets of wider cover profile to cover the same roof, resulting in net saving.

Are all the advanced features on the profile being offered? The vital ones are: a) Anti-capillary kink. b) stiffening ribs.

The steel used for making the roofing profiles for you has come from a reliable, world-class supplier like, ARCELOR MITTAL, South Africa or similar others meeting those advanced standards?
