A 35-YEAR-OLD man’s dream of working abroad turned into a nightmare after he was lured via WhatsApp, trafficked, and forced into slave-like conditions with no pay and no way out!
According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the unsuspecting victim applied for a “lucrative” job online, believing he had struck gold — but instead walked straight into the hands of human traffickers.
After arriving in the foreign country that was not named, the man’s travel documents were confiscated by the so-called employer, leaving him stranded and vulnerable.
He was then abused and forced to work long hours under inhumane conditions — without receiving a single cent.
The police have since issued a stern warning to the public to exercise extreme caution when applying for jobs online, especially those that seem too good to be true.
“We urge the public to exercise due diligence when applying for online jobs abroad. Confirm the legitimacy of recruitment agencies and offers before committing,” said the national police spokesperson.
This latest case adds to the growing number of online job scams that are preying on desperate job-seekers.
The police have vowed to work with international partners to bring the traffickers to justice.
