WILSON Fields in Gweru became the centre of wild celebrations which rocked the Midlands provincial capital following the promotion of correctional services side, Whawha into the Premiership after defeating Gweru City 1-0 in a Zifa Central Soccer League encounter. An Ali Njolomi strike in the first half ensured that Whawha carved their name in local football history books by becoming the first prisons and correctional services side to be part of the top flight league.
With the Central Soccer League largely expected to go to the wire, second placed MSU who going into the weekend fixtures were separated by a point with Whawha did themselves a great disservice after going down 0-2 to FC Platinum Under-19s.
Whawha have now amassed an unassailable 55 points from 25 games while MSU remain static on 51 points from the same number of games which leaves the much anticipated final match pitting the two teams a dead rubber.
The correctional services side chairperson Musa Ntonga attributed her side’s success to teamwork, patience and perseverance.
Ntonga said the club would be in the league to stay.
She said Whawha would during the off-season open its cheque book to add reinforcements ahead of next season’s Premiership campaign.
If Chapungu manage to survive relegation, Whawha will become the second team in Gweru in the topflight league.
The league’s board member Stanley Chapeta said the league chairman, Felton Kamambo would issue a statement congratulating the region’s champions.
