LAND is a finite resource and just like cash it can run out. We need to use it wisely. As the population grows so does the need for space.
Competition is becoming stiff and relatively costly. As people die (excuse us for being blunt) they need land. As the population grows it needs more land. It’s a very interesting scenario such that when the population increases it also increases demand for development and burial space.
And as the population increases the more we expect the mortality rate to rise as the chances of dying (numbers wise) is directly related to a growing population. The more we are the more deaths are expected, kunjalo vele.
In simple terms, for Bulawayo which has a population of about 700 000 what this loosely means is that we will need 700 000 homes and 700 000 graves at one point in the future. Probably less on the home front due to marriages and multiple numbers of people under one roof. Now the norm has always been traditional burial rites mainly in which one is buried underground. Probably burials have to be innovative like cremation and multi burials in one place. For now this looks like pushing the moral and social boundaries too far.
Can you imagine uKhumalo being “buried” under his sons or in a colourful vase that stays in the lounge for everyone to see? Amadlozi ke? We had landlines now we use cellular technology, there is a need to embrace new ways of doing business for the living and the dead.
The living should start maximum utilisation of space, that is, be as productive as possible on the smallest of land available. So do the dead.
Having vast pieces of unproductive land is ‘sinful’ and only makes England and the Queen Mother envious but not necessary at all.
Land is a resource and if it’s not generating as much therefore it has holding costs thus compromising efficiency. Let’s be strategic in our thinking and utilise land productively now before it runs out as already urban areas have no more space for the living or the dead. In the long run the cost of burial space will be very prohibitive.
Just when you thought the dead didn’t have a holding cost to their “existence”. This is a serious business case that needs to be addressed now before it becomes a perennial headache especially when our census points to a relatively ageing population.
The price for dying has increased, we might start looking at ways of prolonging the living to delay demand for burial space while we try to resolve the situation. If we were to look at our waste (human, mines redundancy, ICT, cars) disposal strategy you will understand land is running out fast.
We foresee development and burial space hoarding in the near future as a matter of speculation.
It’s a new era we need new ways of doing business for the living and the dearly departed. The game is on for the Zimbabwe human race and the most beautiful talented mind will persevere on this balancing act.
Happy living and dying.
