Where roses reign and greenery glows

IT was a great pleasure to visit both the farm and residence of Yakub Mahomed, chairman of Luxaflor Roses (Pvt) Ltd.

His company specialises in growing quality roses for the export market at Manyewe North Farm in Concession. This is a 22-hectare property, employing 530 people and cultivating a wide variety of beautiful roses.

Following the farm visit, a tour of Mahomed’s beautiful residence in Avondale revealed an equally impressive commitment to horticulture.

The property is adorned with a number of the ancient cycas revoluta, commonly referred to as the Japanese sago palm, which perfectly complement the unique design of the perimeter wall. A welcoming grouping of indoor plants greets visitors at the entrance, setting the tone for the verdant haven within.

Meticulous landscaping and thoughtful design can transform a home into a truly magnificent green oasis

Once inside, the extensive effort to green up the residence is immediately noticeable. A colourful bed of exotic plants is strategically grouped to create a striking impression for both arriving and exiting visitors.

As one enters the residence, an array of tropical plants by the door offers a refreshing visual welcome.

A magnificent specimen of the beaucarnea recurvata (ponytail palm), stands majestically with its gigantic base and grass-like leaves — a truly captivating sight.

Further exploration reveals a grouping of ladder ferns gracefully positioned on the edge of the driveway, where a row of large pots filled with vibrant bromeliads adds to the garden’s tropical ambiance. A lush, green lawn invites guests to wander, while mature cycads encircle the garden, imparting an ancient, homely feel.

Just when you think you have seen it all, the swimming pool area offers a profound sense of rest and relaxation, gracefully set on a slope within the garden.

This thoughtfully designed space provides excellent inspiration for anyone considering creating a water feature for future enjoyment.

When setting up a pool area, several considerations are key to sprucing up the space. Ensure your pool area has a proper edging to prevent salty water from splashing directly onto the lawn, which can damage the grass.

The flooring around the swimming area must not be slippery to ensure safety. Choose the correct tiles with appropriate texture.

Also, pay attention to the colour of the flooring. Dark colours will attract and retain heat, becoming uncomfortably hot during summer months.

Likewise, opt for low-maintenance plants around the pool area, preferably those that do not shed leaves excessively. This will keep the pool looking clean and reduce the laborious task of clearing debris.

Add comfortable furniture to complement your style, as this is an area designed for relaxation.

Incorporating a pergola or gazebo will provide much-needed shade, enhancing the comfort and usability of the space. Overall, Mahomed’s residence exemplifies how meticulous landscaping and thoughtful design can transform a home into a truly magnificent green oasis.
