THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has commended the Government for its commitment to fight cancer, despite the challenges facing the health sector.

Speaking at the launch of the Kidzcan Orange month in Belgravia, Harare, ahead of the commemoration of the International Childhood Cancer Day, WHO country representative Dr Alex Gasasira said the Government and its partners were providing strong support to children diagnosed with cancer.

He said First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa was hitting the ground running with cancer advocacy programmes.

Dr Gasasira said the number of children dying of cancer remained high, with about 300 000 new cases diagnosed annually for ages between 0 and 19, with those in low and middle-income countries most affected.

“Children with cancer in low and middle income countries are four times more likely to die of the disease compared to children in high-income countries,” he said.
