admineight motor bikes, 20 boxes of personal protection equipment kits for H1N1, 38 boxes of soap bars, 200x5L liquid soap and other laboratory reagents and accessories.
The emergency medical kits are meant to respond to public health emergencies such as typhoid and would be distributed to selected provinces and towns. The kits contain drugs and a wide range of medical preparations for an emergency response to diarrhoeal diseases.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, WHO representative Dr David Okello said the package was in response to the cholera and typhoid outbreaks.
“May I take this opportunity to re-affirm the commitment of WHO to work together with the Government of Zimbabwe through the MOHCW, to provide technical and other logistical support within our means in response to health needs of this wonderful country,” said Dr Okello.
He said the supplies could still be used for other medical conditions.
“Although these outbreaks are virtually over, the supplies can still be used for other medical conditions. We have a huge consignment of personal protective equipment left in our stores, which can be used for any procedure in hospitals and health facilities requiring barrier nursing,” he said. “We urge all health facilities that are going to benefit from this donation of PPE to train users and put them in proper use.”
Speaking during the same occasion Health and Child Welfare secretary Dr Gerald Gwinji thanked WHO for the gesture.
