Why are kids failing O-Level

Tanaka Mahanya

THE 2022 O-Level results released on Friday last week had a 28.96 percent pass rate triggering a wide debate.

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) stated that out of 183 584 candidates who wrote five or more subjects, only 53 169 passed at least five subjects.

The statistics show that attaining five passes at O-Level is now a challenge for most learners.

Some believe the current generation of teens is too absorbed by social media lifestyles that they do not take their school seriously.

Below are some of the comments:

I think this is caused by rural-urban learning disparities. Villages in our country are really backward in everything. This is why some of the students are left behind. It is not because they do not want to learn, but they do not have what it takes to pass. — Blessing Anotida Musananguro.

Teachers are no longer in schools to teach, but they go to school with ‘‘kungwavha’’ in mind. They have given up. — John Dziva.

I also blame ZIMSEC for most children’s poor performances. Who is to blame on the leakages? Before we blame the children, we must start by addressing the root cause of the problem. — Wekwa Kudukudu.

Ne TikTok iyi, you cannot expect a decent pass rate; that is my opinion. — Ginny Chikede.

We are in the middle of a drug pandemic. This is one of the reasons learners are failing to attain at least five O-Level passes. It will not work. — Chipo Mudiko.

Vanopasa nepaiko vana ava havabve kuma party, club nemjolo. I am glad the police are now dealing with those found in possession of drugs. — Mandy Wekwa Knight.

These children are exposed to too much freedom that they do not have time to study. That is the reason most of them are failing to pass at least five subjects. If the situation continues like this, then we are not going anywhere. Parents should commit themselves to assisting their children at home and not just leave everything to teachers. — Makaita.
