Why Caps cancelled Gutu unveiling

CAPS UNITED cancelled, at the last minute, a ceremony to unveil new signing Archford Gutu because coach Lloyd Chitembwe had reservations about how the whole affair was being handled.

Makepekepe owner Farai Jere revealed that Chitembwe felt holding a function just to unveil Gutu at a time when the club has several other new signings would not have augured well with his drive to build a team.

“As a club we are aware that our decision to cancel the planned ceremony has sent social media into overdrive and given our rivals some false belief that they can still get Uche but the truth is the boy is our player,” said Jere.

“It was the coach who said ‘no we cannot have a ceremony to unveil one player when we have signed others’. Coach Chitembwe felt such a move would not help his team building exercise and as a board we agreed that he had a point.”

Gutu’s manager Kelvin Nyazema described suggestions that negotiations with Makepekepe had fallen through hence the last minute cancellation of the unveiling ceremony as mischievous.

“To us this hullabaloo is the work of mischievous elements. Archford penned a one year contract with Caps United and is looking forward to playing for them and helping them win trophies,” said Nyazema.

Gutu also took to Facebook to confirm that he had indeed turned green.

“Caps United,” he posted last night to trigger an avalanche of comments.

Meanwhile, Makepekepe will continue with their preseason preparations when the tour Mozambique where they have been invited to take part in two preseason tournaments.

They are expected to leave for Mozambique at the weekend.
